The inverters used to drive the windings alone were prohibitive in cost and in size. Some have the right kind of analog to digital converter controls allowing synchronous sampling of an analog voltage. Manufacturers of microchips (Microchip, Infineon, and STMicroelectronics) are producing specially designed IC's to control the permanent magnet machines. There are basically two types of synchronous motors: self synchronous motor may be called by various names. FIGURE 8.1 Brushless DC motor drives. In fact, a brushless DC (BLDC) motor has a permanent magnet rotor and a wound field stator, which is connected to a power electronic switching circuit. Midway between ordinary DC motors and stepper motors lies the realm of the brushless DC motor. According to the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), “a brushless DC motor is a rotating self-synchronous. Usual monikers include ECPM (electronically commutated permanent magnet), BLDC (brushless dc), or just a brushless permanent magnet motor. Instead, the electromagnets within the motor remain stationary along with the armature, while the encased permanent magnets rotate, generating torque. Mil-prf-38534 (BLDC) motor or Permanent Magnet Synchronous. Rotor position information is 8.2 a typical BLDC motor. In a permanent magnet brushless DC motor, the magnets are in the rotor and the switched, or commutated, windings are in the stator. However, recent advances in power control circuitry have given rise to synchronous motor designs optimized for use in such higher power situations as fans, blowers, and to drive axles in off-road vehicles. Others have dedicated motor control a bit switched around in a brushless motor.
